Humility Values Others

Hello LOH E-members!

The word that I would like to share with you today comes from Philippians 2:3 (NIV). It states: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” I want to break this scripture down to understand what God is trying to get to us.

Do nothing out of: In this part of scripture, we are challenged to look at the motive of every action we take. For those who claim that the lordship of Jesus is in control of their lives, the code of conduct of examining our motives behind what we do and the choices we make should be a regular part of our daily living.

Selfish ambition or vain conceit: I have come to find from my own life that if I am spending a lot of time looking out for my own interests, I am not walking in faith. Matthew 6:33 (NLT) says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” The word also states in Psalms 37:4 (NKJV): “Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.”

If we are trying to take care of us, then do we really believe God’s word? Do we trust His character? He promises that if we look after His interests, He will take care of ours!

Rather in humility: Humility is defined as “the quality of having a modest view of one’s value or importance.” If Jesus — the son of God, God-made flesh — can humble Himself to think of you and me to endure the cross, how much more can we (who have not done anything close to that for anyone) live a life of humility? It is a choice we must make.

Value others above yourselves: Some of you may think this is a great strategy for people in this life to walk all over you and take advantage of your humility and kindness. Let me challenge your thinking with the Word. In 1 Corinthians 13:5 (NLT), it challenges us to keep no record of wrong. Yes, if you live this way, people will offend; in fact, Jesus tells His disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come …” (Luke 17:1, NKJV).

To live in this way is not for the weak but be encouraged that the strength that you need is given by the One who calls you to this life of service. As 2 Peter 1:3 (AMP) states: “For His divine power has bestowed on us [absolutely] everything necessary for [a dynamic spiritual] life and godliness, through true and personal knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
