Do you realize that nothing can withstand the power of the Word of God – no obstacle — no matter its size? In Jeremiah 23, God compares His Word with “fire” and with a “hammer” that can break a rock. Jeremiah 23:29 says, “Is not my word like fire declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”
The first part of that scripture compares the Word of God to a fire. God’s Word is like a fire that can warm and comfort. We all have experienced the warmth and comfort of a fire. But God’s Word is also like a fire that can melt the hardest materials. Many years ago, I toured a metal castings foundry operation, and I can still recall seeing the molten, hot, liquefied metal. God’s Word can melt the hardest heart that is thickened by anger, jealousy, hatred, and other hardening qualities.
The second part of Jeremiah 23:29 asks if the Word of God is not like a hammer that breaks the rock into pieces. The New Living Translation renders it thus: “Is it not like a mighty hammer that smashes a rock to pieces?” The Word of God is compared to a hammer here. Many times, a hammer does not break a rock into pieces all at once; it must be applied consistently for some time. Every blow weakens the rock inside, although this may not be obvious. But the last blow completely breaks it to pieces. However, the result is a product of all the combined blows. As we consistently apply the Word of God, even if it appears there is no result or noticeable impact, the results will soon be obvious.
When Jesus cursed the fig tree in Mark 11, nothing immediately appeared to the disciples to prove that the curse was effective. However, the following day, they noticed that the tree had dried up from the roots. Mark 11:20 says, “Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.” It had dried up from the roots! If the disciples had seen the withering of the leaves immediately after Jesus spoke, they would have known that His Word had started having an effect, but the tree dried up from the roots which were hidden inside the soil. Keep speaking the Word of God in faith; something is already happening from the roots!
So be assured that God’s Word is working in your life, and, like a hammer, it will break up any stubborn rocks that you may be facing. Whatever you need today — wisdom for a decision, healing in your body, a financial miracle, or restoration of a broken relationship — the Word of God has the answer!
